Civil Security: Understanding the Risks, Preventing Disasters, and Mitigating the Impacts with Earth Observation (EO) Applications and Services

Quebec City: October 29, 2015

National security is one of the engines of Canada’s activities in space. In recent years, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA, a CEOS Member Agency) advanced the field of civil security and disaster risk management in Canada through partnerships with industry, universities, and government. These partnerships focus on the needs of organizations working in the civil security field and promote the integration of operational Earth observation (EO) technologies and services, including data processing, methods, applications, demonstrations, and more. These innovations and solutions help us better understand disaster risks and mitigate the consequences of disasters, such as floods, forest fires, landslides, water pollution, train accidents, and coastal storms.

This workshop took place in the XVI Congress of the Quebec Association of Remote Sensing (AQT) as part of the CEOS Working Group on Capacity Building & Data Democracy (WGCapD) Distance Education Course – Remote Sensing Technology for Disaster Risk Management. It included 11 presentations (9 in French, 2 in English) highlighting the successful use and integration satellite Earth observations by various clients and end-users.

This event was supported by Effigis Geo Solutions. It was co-organized by the L’Association Québécoise de Télédétection (L’AQT), Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and CEOS WGCapD in partnership with Environment Canada (EC), Effigis Geo Solutions, European Space Agency (ESA), Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), MDA, Ministère de la Sécurité Publique du Québec (MSP), Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Public Safety Canada (PS).

The recorded sessions and presentations are now publicly available.
